Happy Handwriting Day! January 23 is observed as the day to consider your handwriting in conjunction with legendary penman John Hancock’s birthday, best remembered for his large, ornate signature on the Declaration of Independence.

Lily Kim of JetPens recently did a guest post on Uppercase magazine’s blog about finding the right pen to improve your handwriting.
One point I think that wasn’t brought up in her piece was the speed at which you write and how that might effect your penmanship. Some inks feel considerably slicker which aids in speed but maybe not in tidiness. And also the pen combined with the texture or smoothness of your paper. For example, I love the cleanliness and waterproof qualities of the Pilot Envelope pens but, boy, are they ever slippery! I recommend combining them with paper with a bit of tooth to it or its like ice skating!

I’ve been reading a lot about handwriting and the power of the written word. I think its still an important skill to be able to write longhand. Not just eloquently but neatly.

How about you? Do you miss getting letters in the mail or taking a few minutes to dash off your thoughts in a journal or notebook?
